Tax and Financial Issues Faced by Divorcing Couples/MWI

It is common for mediators to feel at least slightly uncomfortable with the financial side of divorce and family mediation. Even for those who are trained or participated in a mentorship, there are most likely tax issues that both the parties and even you as mediator might have questions about. What constitutes an alimony agreement under the tax code? What needs to be included in the alimony agreement? What is the difference between alimony and unallocated support? When is alimony deductible? How much is the dependency exemption worth? What is required to release the dependency exemption? Who gets the mortgage interest and real estate tax deduction? What is innocent spouse relief? As you might imagine, the list of questions goes on and on.

David Goodman, a CPA with Gosule, Butkus & Jesson LLP, will answer all of these questions and more. He has run similar workshops for law firms in Boston as well as select divisions within the MA Probate and Family Court Department. Whether you are recently trained and still a brand new divorce mediator, or a veteran looking for a tune up, this Roundtable will allow all of us to focus our practices on just simply facilitating, with the confidence assumed from holding the answers to tax and financially based questions in our back pockets. Join David and fellow MWI family mediators for an informative and valuable learning experience.

MWI Roundtable events are free for all active MWI mediators. Those who are not actively mediating with the MWI Court Panel are welcome to attend up to two Roundtables per year for free. RSVP is required for all attendees and can be completed by registering online. For more information on this and other upcoming MWI Roundtables, click here.
