What prevents people from engaging in mediation? What goes wrong with mediators' messages? What kind of successful communication strategies can mediators use? This interactive workshop will examine the dialogue from real-life cases to illustrate and analyze communication gaps between a caller/potential client and a mediator/intake screener.

At this workshop, mediators, case managers, screeners, and others will learn about typical pitfalls in initial conversations about mediation; factors that lead someone to say no to mediation; and how to make callers want to participate.

With a background in psychology, Elizabeth Stokoe, who is also an editor at the British Journal of Social Psychology, has studied conversations in a variety of contexts and has presented many workshops to mediators using an approach she calls the Conversation Analytic Role-play Method.

A reception from 5-6 pm will follow the training.
