This forty hour skills development training course is intended to provide law students, lawyers, counselors and others with an understanding of the contexts in which family conflict arises, the various legal and practical issues in play when families disintegrate, and with in-depth training in the skills that a mediator might employ to help the divorcing parties resolve their differences. The training course exposes the participant to relevant factors and normative approaches used by courts in dividing property, determining child support, custody, visitation, and spousal support among other issues, while recognizing that parties in mediation are empowered to reach their own agreements with the aid of the mediator. Role playing exercises are used to integrate theory with practice.

Participants successfully completing this training course are issued Certificates of Completion of Family & Divorce Mediation Training. Rhode Island Attorneys successfully completing the training are also eligible for 20 hours of MCLE credit including 2 hours of ethics credit.

This training course will have an enrollment limited to no more than sixteen law students and eight non-law student participants for a total of no more than twenty-four. The cost of this training course for non-law students is $1,000. A deposit of $250 to hold a place in the class must be paid upon acceptance into the course with the balance due by May 17, 2013. The deposit will be refundable only up to May1, 2013.
