CMCRI's Basic Mediation Skills Training (BMST) is a highly interactive 30-hour course, taught by experienced mediators and trainers, that provides participants with the fundamentals of the facilitative mediation process.

The BMST covers the following areas:

Conflict Theory and Styles
Role of the Mediator
Role of Confidentiality and Neutrality
Building Trust and Setting the Stage
Active Listening
Identification of Positions and Interests
Reframing and Summarizing Techniques
Setting an Agenda
Dealing with Impasse
Agreement Writing
Ethics and Standards of Practice

The training is focused on practical skill-building with many group exercises and role-plays.

In response to feedback from training participants, CMCRI has also developed a formal mentoring program to help trainees develop beyond the Basic Mediation Skills Training. The apprenticeship offers opportunities for recent trainees to act as mediators in 4 complete role-play sessions with individualized feed back in groups of 4 or fewer. At the end of the apprenticeship, apprentices will receive customized, individual feedback from CMCRI staff. These sessions will be scheduled at the convenience of the participants.
